Crock Pot Crab Dip
I asked my good friend, Lori, from We Pillage the Village if she would be willing to share a good seafood recipe with us. She lives up north were good seafood abounds…and most of my knowledge of seafood is tuna in a can. 😉 Thanks Lori!!
Every year I’m the “crab dip lady”. Come September, my sister has a big band competition with her high school marching band and it’s my duty to provide the crab dip to the judges and band staff. That’s about 150 people. It’s a HUGE hit every year and I have to say that it’s the best crab dip I’ve ever tasted – and coming from Maryland, I’ve had lots of crab dip. I always keep it hot and bubbly in a crock pot for the 6 hours that the competition lasts. It holds up great and goes wonderful with crackers, Melba toast, pita and raw veggies. [Read more…]
Crock Pot Granola
I just have to tell you that I love my friend, Jill, from The Prairie Homestead. She’s such a sweetheart…and now she’s given me a way that makes it harder to burn granola. She’s a saint I tell ya…a saint.
I really admire those moms (and dads!) who whip up a big breakfast every single day of the week…
As much as I love cooking, breakfast at my house is pretty ho-hum. Since my morning routine involves rushing out the door to do chores and milk the cow before my 2 year- old wakes up, my morning “cuisine” is usually quite simple… (And boring.)
Because I haven’t purchased any sort of boxed cereal for several years now, I usually rotate between oatmeal, scrambled eggs, or yogurt… It gets old after a while.
So, whenever I find a make-ahead recipe that allows me to cook once and still have a decent breakfast for a couple days of my week, I’m thrilled!

I am not a beach person. My idea of a good time usually involves shade and cooler weather…not sand that gets in weird places and sunshine that bakes you from the outside in.
I’ve been camping since I was 8 years old. At my request, my parents decided to try it once – and they ended up LOVING it. We’ve been every year since then. Annie, went on her first camping trip at 2 months old.
We started out in tents but my parents graduated to a pop-up camper. However, when we camp we like to “rough it.” We usually don’t use electricity, but we do use gas for our little camping stove…perfect for our secluded mountain camping spots.
One of our favorite parts about camping is the food. For some reason, food tastes so much better outdoors! And cooking the food is most of the fun!
There are some people who think going camping means you eat cans of Beenie Weenies and pre-packaged doughnuts. That’s never really been the case with us – we enjoy experimenting with food while we camp and we try to eat a wide variety of foods.
Today I’m chatting over at Keeper of the Home about how to make your camping food more healthy…with a little of my 80/20 Principle thrown in. 😉

Save With Crockpot/Slow Cooker Cooking
By now you know I have a strange obsession with my crock pot. The good news is, not only is a crock pot a time saver, it’s also a money saver! Today, Frugal Sally will tell us 6 areas in which crock pots save money and time…because that’s how we roll.
Let me start this by saying “I love my crockpot”. There are so many reasons why I cannot do without this item in my kitchen. For starters, it is the easiest way you will ever cook. That is a fact! But the best reason is that it saves you money big time. It also saves you time and as far as I’m concerned, time IS money! [Read more…]
4 Reasons We Eat Bread
Ya know, I’ve never been popular. I’ve never done the popular things or been “in the know.” That’s just not me. I’m not really concerned with that type of thing. I don’t hop on bandwagons and I don’t follow trends. Instead, I tend to prefer the “old school” method of doing things. I like old stuff.
It may be for that last reason that I find this new “anti-bread” age disturbing. Why is everyone on a gluten-free diet? What did bread to do get such a bad rep? It smells delicious – it tastes delicious – and it just looks pretty.
Let me take a second to say that I realize not everyone can eat bread. I have friends who are severely allergic to gluten, so they don’t eat bread. I also have friends and family members that have medical conditions that don’t allow them to eat wheat. I think that’s the smart and responsible thing for them to do – they have a hard job and I give them GREAT respect. I also have family members who are allergic to bees…so they try to keep their distance. Does that mean everyone should be deathly afraid of bees? Heck no! If you don’t have an allergy, why not enjoy the lovely gift of bread that God gave us?
NOTE: This is my view for my family. I’m not telling you how to live or what to eat. I’m simply giving you the reasons why we eat bread and why we think the anti-bread age is downright silly. If you don’t want to eat bread, that’s great. Can I have your piece? [Read more…]
Crock Pot Chicken Cordon Bleu
Friday again and another great recipe! Today we welcome Ashley from Spunky Suds with a recipe that will work for company or for a weeknight dinner. Oh, and make sure to check out her soaps – they rock!!
I was searching for a recipe for Chicken Cordon Bleu and much to my disappointment, I found that most recipes called for ingredients such as stove top stuffing and cream of chicken soup. I don’t know about you, but I’m not too keen on feeding my family meals that are full of MSG and ingredients that I can’t even pronounce, (I like to use this rule of thumb—if I can’t pronounce it, I shouldn’t use it—and that goes for food and also for skin care).
I know that I can’t micromanage everything in my life, but there are parts that I can certainly avoid. After much searching, I was finally able to find a recipe that sounded good and used real food for ingredients! I made a few adjustments to mine, and we are happy to add this to one of our special family recipes! [Read more…]
Crock Pot Creamy Italian Chicken & Rice Casserole
While we’re remodeling this house, I’m super excited that I’ve been able to find so many of you that are willing to post on Fridays for me. 🙂 Today we have Kim Morefield from A Morefield Life. Thanks Kim!
Being a busy mom of 4 small children, I absolutely love all-in-one-meals. Add the worry-free benefit of a crock pot and you have a recipe for extra time with your family instead of time slaving in the kitchen! Don’t get me wrong, you’ll still have the smiling faces and empty plates because yumminess and wholesome goodness is still an important part of any meal in our family equation – it’ll just take less time, and time is something we all could use more of, right?
I will give the basic recipe I used, but feel free to tweak it according to your schedule, needs, and family preferences. Since I am home for summer break and not teaching, I was able to add rice and veggies later in the process to make it an all-in-one meal. If I were using this recipe on a busy school day when I couldn’t be home to add the variations below (rice, broccoli, etc.), I might alter it by simply boiling some wheat noodles and steaming some veggies to go with the main course. Mama’s Tomato Soup – With Cloves
For as long as I can remember, my Mama has made this soup. She has spoiled me. I can’t even touch the “tomato soup” in a can. What is that stuff anyway? It tastes like a big bowl of nothingness to me. Yuck! (No offense to my husband and dad who actually like that stuff.)
This recipe is SO easy and SO frugal that I just had to share it. I’m tickled that my mom is letting you in on some of her awesome recipes like this and Sausage Macaroni. Can you tell that I was fed well as a child? Annie loves this soup now too! She gobbles it down and begs for more. So, pull up to the computer with your grilled cheese and let’s make soup! Brownie Pie
It is no coincidence that I first made this pie when Barry was out of town. You see, I have this thing for brownies…and I don’t like to share. I eat them when Annie is asleep and Barry is gone. And then I hide the pie plate under a towel in the kitchen. Survival of the hungriest. If you pair a brownie with vanilla ice cream, you better watch out or I might just bite your hand off. Don’t get between me and my brownie. This is your warning.
This pie is SO easy you’ll make it all the time…but don’t blame me. I’m just sharing the love. Don’t make this for potlucks or for Sunday family dinner. Don’t do it. There will be fights and gnashing of teeth because I do think it is indeed possible to eat this whole pie in one sitting and not share. Not that I would know that type of thing…I’m just guessing.
